Fairfax County bulk trash pickup vs. junk removal

Checked October 14, 2026

The short answer

Fairfax County only picks up bulk items for the roughly 10% of households that get trash service from the county. Everyone else goes through their own trash company, drives it to the dump, or hires a hauler. Use the county for small curbside loads, and hire a crew when the items are heavy, inside the house, or there's a lot of them.

Who gets county bulk pickup

The county's special pickup is for county collection customers only. It covers brush, bulk items, metal, electronics and refrigerant appliances. Each load must be under 2 cubic yards, and you get five free collections per type of item each fiscal year. Schedule by calling 703-802-3322 or with the county's online form.

If an HOA or a private company like your neighborhood's trash contractor collects your trash, you need to ask them. Their bulk rules and fees vary.

Dropping it off yourself

Residents can bring junk to the I-66 Transfer Station (4618 West Ox Road, Fairfax) or the I-95 Landfill Complex in Lorton. Under the FY2027 residential rates:

  • Large single items like a sofa, recliner, dresser, desk, mattress or box spring: $17 each
  • Small single items: $11 each
  • Refrigerators, freezers and other appliances with refrigerant: $15 each
  • Weighed loads of trash: $98 per ton, with a $39 to $98 minimum by load size
  • Most recyclables: free

When a junk removal crew makes more sense

  • The items are inside, upstairs or in the basement. County pickup is curbside only.
  • It's more than 2 cubic yards, roughly the bed of a small pickup truck.
  • You don't have a truck, or don't want to lift a sofa or appliance into one.
  • You're on a deadline, like a move-out, closing or tenant turnover.
  • It's a mix of furniture, appliances, bags and debris that would take several trips or pickups.

What we charge

Single items start at $89. Half a truckload is $329 and a full truck is $549, with dump fees and carrying it out included. Send photos when you book and we email an exact price before we come.
